Masters in Information Systems and Information Management

As a future digital leader, this course provides you with the latest skills and capabilities to utilise digital technologies and manage information effectively in business.

Digital technologies are fundamentally transforming business models, products, services and ways of working. You will learn tools and techniques for managing technology-mediated-change and innovation in business. You will be equipped to successfully adapt and innovate to meet the challenges and opportunities posed by digital transformation.

You will benefit from strong links to business, as the course has been co-designed by academic experts and industry leaders from our Advisory Board.

Digital Information Management and Systems Innovation is a constantly evolving subject area with real world application and impact. This is reflected in the course at Leeds, which is regularly reviewed and updated to ensure it remains relevant to key trends and pressing challenges in digital technology.

Course highlights

  • This course responds to the needs of the industry and evolves to explore developments and trends, such as: disruptive technologies, big data, AI, social media.

  • Content is co-developed by industry practitioners through an Advisory Board, with representatives from leading UK and international businesses, including IBM, Ericsson, ITV, BT, and Crisp and Thales Group. Members also deliver guest lectures, workshops, site visits, and provide dissertation projects.

  • Benefit from teaching informed by research from the AIMTech Research Centre, one of Europe’s most influential research centres in information systems and information management.

Course details

Core modules explore approaches to digital transformation management and the strategic importance of developing new business models, products and services - particularly in relation to digital technologies. Part of this is also learning about innovation processes to acquire skills for generating innovative ideas and actualising them successfully to grow businesses.

Core modules will also develop your understanding of the concepts and perspectives of the design and implementation of information systems, and how to manage digital information projects through project management methodologies such as agile. This includes learning about contemporary approaches to projects like crowdsourcing and crowdfunding.

Additionally, you will gain in-depth knowledge of the importance of digital information management as a core business activity. This involves critical thinking in relation to privacy, security and ethics. You will also examine the ways in which businesses use information in analytics and decision science which will broaden your skills and competence.

Within the course, you are provided with the possibility to choose one optional module from a range of specialisms, such as data-driven consultancy, socio-technical systems thinking, operations and supply chain management and entrepreneurship.

By the end of the course, you will submit a dissertation on a topic of your choice to focus on a specific question in-depth. You may be able to choose a topic set by one of our industry partners, demonstrating your knowledge and skills in an area of clear interest to business.

Learning and teaching

You’ll be taught using a range of methods including lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. The rest of your time will be spent in independent learning, which allows you to develop your skills in research and analysis.

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Assessment

Assessment methods emphasise not just knowledge, but essential skills development too. This may include formal exams, group projects, reports, computer simulation exercises, essays and written assignments, group and individual presentations and reflective logs.

A bachelor’s degree with a 2:1 (hons) in business, management or any relevant subject e.g. computing, information systems, engineering, etc.

International qualifications

We accept a range of international equivalent qualifications.

English language requirements

IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in any component. For other English qualifications, read English language equivalent qualifications.

Improve your English

International students who do not meet the English language requirements for this programme may be able to study our postgraduate pre-sessional English course, to help improve your English language level.

This pre-sessional course is designed with a progression route to your degree programme and you’ll learn academic English in the context of your subject area. These scholarships offer a 50% fee reduction and will be awarded to particularly deserving applicants who demonstrate excellent academic, professional and personal achievements.
