This course provides a complete introduction to business and management. Designed for students who are new to the subject, it will give you essential insight into how organisations operate and the skills to develop a rewarding business career.

You’ll build a solid understanding of strategic management and the wider business environment, exploring the latest topics and gaining the knowledge to succeed as a future-focused manager.

Based on the latest academic thinking and with input from senior industry professionals, you’ll develop the know-how and skills that employers value, including critical thinking, analytical expertise, problem solving and collaborative working.

Course details and modules

You’ll study a range of compulsory modules that build the business knowledge and skills needed to succeed as a manager.

You'll be introduced to topics such as operations and supply chain management, organisational behaviour, strategic management, gathering and understanding data for decision making, corporate social responsibility, and ethical and sustainable business.

Management in Practice is a core module studied across two semesters. Designed to equip you with the professional skills you need to be an effective manager, you’ll cover team working, leadership, self-development and employability. The module draws on input from a variety of sources, including the Business School’s corporate partners.

Alongside these compulsory areas, you’ll also be offered the opportunity to select a themed study pathway that will allow you to pursue your interests. This could include exploring digital business, marketing and human influence, or enterprise and entrepreneurship.

In addition, a module in research design and analysis will prepare you to complete your dissertation in the final semester. The dissertation is an independent research project on a topic of your choice, which can be tailored to meet your individual interests and career goals.

Learning and teaching

You’ll be taught using a range of methods including lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. The rest of your time will be spent in independent learning, which allows you to develop your skills in research and analysis. Our Virtual Learning Environment will help to support your studies: it’s a central place where you can find all the information and resources for the School, your programme and modules.

On this course, you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Assessment

Assessment methods emphasise not just knowledge, but essential skills development too. This may include formal exams, group projects, reports, computer simulation exercises, essays and written assignments, group and individual presentations and reflective logs. This diversity enables you to develop a broad range of skills in preparation for professional life.
