A programme developed for graduates in electronic engineering or similar subjects, our Engineering, Technology and Business Management MSc will prepare you to become a senior manager or entrepreneur in global companies, where understanding technology and managing innovation in business are key to success.

The course is jointly delivered by the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Leeds University Business School, allowing you to select optional modules from different electronic and electrical engineering and business themes. This gives you the opportunity to build up specialist knowledge in areas that align with your interests and career aspirations.

You’ll be taught by leading experts in technology and in business management, with practical laboratory sessions and project work, allowing you to gain hands-on experience investigating and applying topics from your lectures and tutorials to real-life engineering and business situations.

This joint Masters degree programme offers a unique opportunity to enhance both your technical and managerial skills.

Course details

A set of compulsory modules form the core of the programme, developing your understanding of the global electronics industry as well as fundamental business management topics.

You'll study the principles of managing innovation and gain an understanding of risk perception, as well as operations and supply chain management. To complete your studies, you'll gain additional specialist knowledge through specialist modules related to different themes, including topics such as healthcare technologies, renewable energy, information management, as well as specialist business topics such as global logistics and strategic management.

Compulsory modules

Modern Industry Practice –15 credits

This module will engage you in developing a detailed understanding of the global engineering industry and support you with your career plans.

Risk Perception and Communication –15 credits

This module will help future executives, policy makers, financial advisors, health professionals, and other practitioners to gain a critical understanding of how non-experts perceive risks, as well as how to effectively communicate risk information to diverse audiences.

Managing for Innovation –15 credits

This module prepares you to lead innovation initiatives in both large and established organizations as well as in new and growing ventures. The module navigates between different concepts and perspectives in order to unveil how organizations take strategic advantage from incremental and radical changes in products, services, business models and societal aspirations.

Operations and Supply Chain Management –15 credits

This module aims to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in Operations and Supply Chain Management. The module covers the relevant fundamental theory and practices for these key functions. The module gives you an insight into the diversity of the functions and what the key issues and concerns are related to strategy, design, planning and control and improvement.

Engineering, Technology and Business Management Project – 45 credits

The major project is a key distinctive feature of the programme, enabling you to apply the academic principles learned from both the engineering and business disciplines in a detailed study of a high technology commercial challenge. Each project will be jointly supervised by academic members from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Leeds University Business School to optimise the academic quality of the work from both an engineering and business perspective.

The project will equip you with the independent research and critical thinking skills that you'll draw on throughout your future career.

  • Node positioning and localisation in wireless sensor networks
  • Cloud Computing as a Disruptive Innovation
  • Future of wireless communications: A case analysis of the innovation and standardisation challenges linked to development of 5G technology

Optional modules

Data Communications and Network Security – 15 credits

This module will develop your knowledge and understanding of data communications networks and their use in a range of applications and consider the need for network security and appropriate security measures.

Smart Grid Analysis – 15 credits

Learn the concepts behind future sustainable electricity systems with increased use of distributed microgenerators. You will gain a knowledge and understanding of the issues relating to the integration of distributed generators (including renewable sources), their control and protection methods, and tools to analyse their impact on the grid.

Electric Power Generation by Renewable Sources – 15 credits

This module provides you with knowledge of sustainable electrical power generation using renewable energy harvesting technologies, with particular emphasis on electrical solar and wind power generation.

Electric Power Generation and Distribution – 15 credits

This module gives you an understanding of the various layers and components in modern electric power networks, of how power systems are operated in technical and economic terms as well as of the technological changes power systems will be facing in the years to come.

Medical Electronics and E-Health – 15 credits

In this module, you will gain a knowledge and understanding of how electronics technology is used in medical applications and healthcare, and to consider a range of possible future developments in this field.

Programming – 15 credits

You will develop a competence in computer programming, using both Matlab and the C programming language.

Effective Decision Making – 15 credits

This aims to teach effective management decision making on the basis of evidence-based approaches from risk management, cognitive psychology, and behavioural economics. During this module, you will obtain an understanding of the thinking processes that underlie your own and others’ judgement and decision making, the judgmental errors and decision biases that commonly arise, and strategies for improving decisions. The module does not assume any prior knowledge and will give insight into effective decision making that is useful in both personal and professional contexts.

Strategic Management – 15 credits

This module introduces topics that equip students to make strategic judgement under uncertainty by relaying on rigorous analytical models and in-depth understanding of strategy processes and practice.

Managing Global Logistics and Supply Chains – 15 credits

The aim of this module is to equip you with skills and knowledge to manage planning, transport, sourcing, distribution, logistics and supply chain management in a global context.

International Purchasing and Supply Management – 15 credits

This module aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills of managing international purchasing and supply. It provides a grounded understanding of the key issues in designing, managing and improving sourcing and strategic supply management. The module offers you with advanced theories and practical methods needed to address business challenges such as global competition, sustainability and supply chain disruptions.

Innovation Management in Practice – 15 credits

This module will extend your knowledge of the concepts and principles studied in other modules in innovation and provide a critical understanding of specific innovation principles, practices, tools and processes needed for the management and development of innovation.

Learning and teaching

Our groundbreaking research feeds directly into teaching, and you’ll have regular contact with staff who are at the forefront of their disciplines, through lectures, laboratory sessions, seminars, examples classes, tutorials and project meetings.

Independent study is also important to the programme. You'll develop your problem-solving and research skills as well as your subject knowledge while studying the modules taught modules and undertaking your project work.

Specialist facilities

Our School is an exciting and stimulating environment where you'll learn from leading researchers in specialist teaching facilities with high-quality test and measurement equipment. These include our Keysight Technologies Electronics Laboratory and Arm Embedded Systems Laboratory. Depending on the modules and projects that you choose to work on, you'll also have access to teaching facilities from across the different schools and faculties.

Programme team

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Assessment

You'll be assessed using a range of techniques including, but not limited to, mini-projects, case studies, technical reports, presentations, in-class tests and coursework assignments.

A bachelor degree with a 2:1 (Hons) in electronic/electrical engineering, communications engineering, informatics, computing, mechatronics, or a related science or engineering subject.

Due to the high demand for programmes in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, incomplete applications may be rejected without full assessment.
