Course overview

Learn how to design the cities of tomorrow, as you help deliver cleaner air, greener spaces and improved quality of life for people everywhere.
Cities across the world face huge sustainability challenges. While leaders pledge ‘zero carbon cities’ by 2040, a serious skills shortage means a new generation of sustainability leaders is needed.
Our Sustainable Cities MSc tackles this shortfall by equipping you with the expertise necessary to become an urban sustainability leader. You'll experience urban sustainability first hand, blending concepts and theories with real-world problems and solutions.
You'll learn about energy systems, transport networks, housing provision and urban ecosystems. Using real-life cases, you'll discover how to transform these structures for better economic, environmental, and social outcomes, fully equipping you to embed your learning in your existing career or pursue new careers in city government, consultancy, NGOs and beyond.
Though the challenges remain significant, sustainable cities offer better economic prospects, improved biodiversity, greater social equity and a better way of life. As an MSc Sustainable Cities graduate, you’ll play a crucial role in making that a reality.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Analyse complex urban sustainability challenges using systems thinking approaches.
- Develop solutions for sustainable energy, housing, transport and urban ecosystems.
- Evaluate the environmental, social and economic impacts of urban policies and interventions.
- Apply research methods and evidence to address real-world urban sustainability problems.
- Design and communicate practical recommendations that support more sustainable and resilient cities.
[My course] has given me a renewed sense of hope and helped make me feel more empowered to do something about the climate crisis.

Course details and modules
Our Sustainable Cities MSc is driven by the sustainability challenges facing cities around the world. The course combines the core concepts of sustainability and urbanism with applied, problem-based learning, enabling you to explore real-world issues and develop practical solutions. Your core modules focus on the key systems that shape sustainable cities, including energy, housing, mobility, and urban ecosystems.
These modules are complemented by broader study of urban sustainability and research methods for sustainable development.. Learning takes places both inside and outside the classroom, with a range of assessments designed to help you develop and demonstrated your communication, analytical and problem solving skills.
You’ll bring your learning together through an independent research project investigating a real-world urban sustainability challenge. This is often described by students as one of the most rewarding parts of the programme, giving you the opportunity to explore an areas of particular interest while being supervised by a leading researcher from one of the three contributing schools.
Course structure
The list shown below represents typical modules/components studied and may change from time to time. Read more in our terms and conditions.
Compulsory modules
Cities and Sustainability (30 credits)

This module includes a field trip.
Research and Skills for Urban Sustainability (30 credits)
Equips you with the tools needed to investigate and solve real-world urban sustainability challenges. You'll develop skills in research design, data analysis and critical thinking, while exploring a range of approaches used by sustainability professionals and researchers. Through hands-on workshops and practical activities, you'll gain the confidence to understand independent research and make evidence-based recommendations for more sustainable cities.
City Systems: Energy (15 credits)

This module will develop your independent research capacity within the field of sustainable cities. The research project will build on all previous learning to produce an original piece of research centred on a live urban problem identified by you and supported by an academic supervisor.
Examples of project topics include:
- Linking up energy and transport systems with a project on electric vehicles in the city.
- Undertaking public ‘visioning’ exercises for major sustainability developments.
