The programme consists of 8 modules providing an excellent insight into international health.
- Two modules providing a foundation in international health: Health Policy and Development, Health Systems in Low & Middle Income Countries
- Three topic modules covering the main health challenges in low to middle income countries: Communicable Disease Control, Non-communicable Diseases, Maternal, Reproductive and Child Health
- Three modules which prepare the student for fieldwork: Project A (Literature Review), Research Methods, Project B (Research Project).
What’s so special about the programme?
We provide you with excellent support so you can achieve your full potential, including an induction programme which covers core skills in international health, critical thinking and literature review skills.
You will be based in the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development. The Nuffield Centre is a research active centre and our work informs our teaching. Our focus is on public health care delivery, and, to a lesser extent on healthcare delivery by non-governmental organisations (the voluntary sector). Issues around the relationship between these two sectors and the private sector are considered during the course.
The Nuffield Centre has a long standing reputation in international health and we are a World Health Organization Collaborative Centre. It’s a highly supportive environment and we encourage all our students to achieve their potential.
The BSc International Health is one of the oldest and most well established programmes in International Health and the programme is delivered by world specialists.
The research project is an incredible opportunity to pursue your own interests –many of our students choose to carry out their project overseas.

You will be studying alongside medical students from Leeds and elsewhere. However, you will also be mixing with health professionals from all over the world who are here to study our other Nuffield programmes, so you can hear about their experiences first-hand.
Research/ Fieldwork Project
You will have the option of doing field work overseas, gaining experience of research design, risk assessment, research ethics, data collection and analysis.

Learning and teaching
Teaching is delivered in lectures, group work, seminars and tutorials.
You will have full access the University of Leeds libraries, which include group study areas and spaces for private study. Much of the course material is provided through the Virtual Learning Environment, which can be accessed remotely, as well as on site. IT facilities have recently been updated and lecturers have access to high quality audio-visual equipment. Student support services are available through the course of study via the University's Student Services Centre.
The programme is assessed through assignments ranging from essays, literature reviews to group presentations and poster presentations. There is no exam.
