Overview
Our Statistics MSc is a flexible Masters degree enabling students from a wide range of backgrounds to both broaden and deepen their understanding of statistics.
The course combines in-depth training in mainstream advanced statistical modelling with a broad range of specialisations, including financial mathematics, clinical trials and risk management.
You’ll also develop your understanding of research methods in statistics from writing styles to programming skills, preparing you for a wide range of careers in different sectors. You’ll apply these skills in an independent research project.

Programme team
Programme leader, Dr Luisa Cutillo, current research interests are related to Networks and Networks applications. In particular, she is interested in studying and validating Networks structures and in biomendical networks application. Additionally, Dr Cutillo was part of a team that organised a COST action event, Women in Networks (WiN) It brought together women from around the world working in networks modelling and applications and hosted at the School of Mathematics.

Course content
The first two semesters of your course will consist of taught modules and in the third semester you will devote your time to a major dissertation.
You’ll learn a range of statistical computing techniques and develop research skills such as academic writing, programming and literature searches.
Options within the course vary from mainstream topics in statistical methodology to allow you to specialise in the areas of statistics that interest you. Specialist areas within the course include biological or financial applications of statistics, or broad-based statistical expertise.

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.
Assessment
The taught course is primarily assessed by end-of-semester examinations with a small component of continuous assessment. The semester three project is assessed by a written dissertation and a short oral presentation.
Applying, fees and funding
Entry requirements
A bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) in a subject containing a substantial mathematical and statistical component.
Successful applicants will have a foundation in Statistics including strong grades in statistical modules (no key marks below 2:2). We may ask for further detailed module information if these are not clear on your transcript. We do not normally accept degrees in Accountancy or Finance.

English language requirements
IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in all components. For other English qualifications, read English language equivalent qualifications.
Improve your English
International students who do not meet the English language requirements for this programme may be able to study our postgraduate pre-sessional English course, to help improve your English language level.
