Our Clinical Education PGDip is a two-year part-time course designed to develop your skills and understanding of the core concepts of Clinical Education. Rooted in workplace learning, we encourage you to make critical and creative connections between your own – and your students’ – practice and theoretical perspectives on teaching, learning and assessment.
At Leeds, you will receive research-led teaching, coaching and supervision provided by a highly experienced, interdisciplinary team from the Faculty of Medicine and Health and practitioners from NHS Trusts.
With us, you will:
debate and discuss the central themes and issues in clinical education
explore the differences between clinical and educational research
undertake introductory research training in educational research
design and conduct small-scale empirical research on a topic relevant to the clinical education workplace
Year 1 – PGCert Year (Blended Learning)
Learning and Teaching in Clinical Education – This module adopts a practice-based and inter-professional approach to clinical education in the workplace and higher education institutions. We introduce the concept of learning and teaching as situated social practice, and invite participants to explore their own learning and teaching experiences throughout the module. The content of the module includes analysis of various ways of designing sessions, courses or programmes, the introduction and evaluation of a range of learning and teaching strategies, including discussion of the educational theories which underpin them and opportunities to apply this knowledge in practical exercises.
Assessment and Evaluation in Clinical Education – This module adopts a practice-based and inter-professional approach to the assessment and evaluation of clinical education in the workplace and higher education institutions.
Participants are encouraged to draw on and present their own experience as learning opportunities throughout the module. The content of the module includes introducing the principles of good practice in assessment, the evaluation of a range of assessment strategies, critical analysis of current research into assessment and opportunities to apply this knowledge in practical exercises. We encourage students to integrate the skills and knowledge introduced during the module into their practice.
Year 2 – PGDip Year (Online Learning)
Developing Educational Practice – This module centres on a collaborative project which enables you to explore, and apply, a range of approaches to curriculum development and technology-enhanced learning. This is underpinned by depth discussion of contemporary theoretical perspectives on learning.
The module also offers scope to identify and negotiate areas of change for further exploration and debate, for example, new professions in healthcare, models of leadership in healthcare education and globalisation.
Researching Clinical Education – This module provides a critical introduction to research planning including ethical research principles, how to distinguish clinical from educational research, and explains methods of capturing and handling research data.
You’ll develop skills in appraising as well as conducting research, and you will be supported in developing a research project to complete in the final year. The Clinical Education Dissertation module enables you to apply your skill and knowledge of research methods and methodology by completing and writing-up a small-scale empirical study on a topic of your own choosing. You will work independently with guidance from a research supervisor.

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.
A bachelor (hons) degree in a health-related subject with at least a 2:2. It is anticipated that you will have completed the PG Cert to progress onto the diploma.
Entry on the appropriate professional register.
It is a course requirement that you be working in a clinical or educational setting with the opportunity to engage in some form of teaching, training, or mentoring.
Accreditation of prior learning to allow entry at a later stage in the course will be considered on a case by case basis, dependent on the qualifications held and evidence provided.
Due to the nature of blended teaching in the first year of the programme (PG Cert level), the first year is not available to study by applicants who are outside the UK. Direct entry to year 2 of the programme (PG Dip level) is available to international applicants who already have a PG Cert in Clinical, Medical or Healthcare Professional Education. Language requirement is IELTS 7.0 overall, with no less than 6.5 in any component.

Places are limited and, where necessary (for example, due to unprecedented demand), the University reserves the right to amend application deadlines.
Applications are considered on the basis of the applicant’s qualifications and experience.
You will need a letter of support from your manager, confirming that you are and will be engaged in teaching in your workplace as part of your role and that you will be given sufficient teaching time to meet the assessment requirements for the course. The reference should be provided on a headed document with either a stamp from the institution or an electronic signature.
If you are applying after completing a certificate programme at another institution then an additional academic reference from that programme should be supplied.
A personal statement (minimum one paragraph) outlining your reasons for wishing to undertake the course, details of relevant experience and how you will be able to satisfy the teaching requirements for the assessment. You should demonstrate through the supporting statement how the course will be of direct benefit to your personal and professional development.
