This degree apprenticeship intends to develop and strengthen the leadership and management skills of new and existing managers. It is suitable for you, whether you’re at the start of your career, or you wish to enhance your practical knowledge in management through a degree.
The course uses your professional experience and the latest research to expand your skills and knowledge of fundamental business concepts such as project management, business finance, and marketing. You’ll develop a critical understanding of both the theory and practice of business management, while focusing on the challenges of your specific workplace. This will prepare you to progress onto more senior management and leadership roles.
The apprenticeship is designed with approximately 27 days per year of face-to-face teaching at the University, along with online and distance learning activities. The rest of your time will be spent in your workplace, giving you the opportunity to practically apply the theories that you are learning. This will offer you a high degree of flexibility, so that you can balance your study and work. Your learning will be fully supported by a workplace mentor from your employer and a personal tutor from the University.

Whatever your concerns or questions, the Lifelong Learning Centre offers free specialist guidance, advice and support to mature and part-time students, from pre-application through to graduation and beyond.
We’ll welcome you into the LLC community, where you’ll be taught by our friendly and supportive staff, who are experienced in working with adult learners. The nature of the course allows you to fit study alongside your work and family commitments, and we’ll support you in doing so successfully.

As an Lifelong Learning Centre student, you’ll have access to dedicated study and social spaces that are designed to be welcoming and accessible. The areas in Beech Grove House and the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Building offer computer access, reference books and the space to socialise and work with your peers.

Course details
You’ll study functional, operational, and strategic aspects of management across five themed pathways, covering consultancy, leadership, skills, innovation, and decision-making. The course is taught within the context of ethics and responsibility, global and cultural insight, and employability threads that run through the modern workplace.

Learning and teaching
Teaching is imaginative and supportive to make sure that you are intellectually stretched and helped to become an independent inquirer. Group sizes are small enabling you to engage actively and be well supported.
On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.
Assessment
Assessments are varied and include essays, projects, case studies, group presentations, and examinations. This wide range gives you the opportunity to work to your strengths and to gain skills in different forms of expression.
Entry requirements
A-level: 3 A-level passes excluding Critical Thinking and General Studies or equivalent. T Levels will be considered on a case by case basis. We welcome students with a wide range of qualifications.
GCSE: English and Maths grade C/4 or above, or equivalent.
Other course specific tests:
Work experience which demonstrates your appreciation of a range of different roles and/or work settings and/or management.
Additional consideration will be given to life experience and circumstances in which you have gained prior qualifications.

Access to HE Diploma
60 credits overall, with 45 graded credits at Level 3, of which 30 must be Merit and 15 at Pass.

Alternative entry
Alternative Entry Scheme for mature applicants
We welcome applications from students with a wide range of qualifications.
If you are a mature applicant and you don’t have the required A Levels or GCSE qualifications, you can complete our Alternative Entry Scheme (subject to meeting the eligibility criteria for the scheme).
As part of this, you may be asked to take tests in English and maths and to write an essay. Contact the Lifelong Learning Centre for more information.
Our experienced staff can also talk to you about how you might meet the entry criteria and what support may be available to you.
Fees
UK: To be confirmed
Fees will be paid by your employer organisation through the UK Apprenticeship Scheme, subject to eligibility.
- You must be fully employed by a UK based organisation and your contract must not expire prior to the end of the training programme.
- If you are employed by a large company, which pays the UK Apprenticeship Levy, the fees will be paid in full by the levy, once your employer has registered with the Digital Apprenticeship Service.
- If you are employed by a non-levy paying organisation, they can apply to reserve funding through the Apprenticeship co-investment scheme. Places are limited and the company will have to pay 5% of the cost of the fees and the Government pay the remaining 95%.
Your employer will be required to enter into a formal written contract with the University of Leeds.
Please note you will not be eligible for a tuition fee or maintenance loans from the Student Loan Company.

Applicants must be employed in an appropriate role and at an appropriate level, in either a levy-paying or non-levy paying institution. Individual employers will set the select criteria for their apprenticeships. Applications for this course should be made via your line manager in the first instance. Employers should contact the Lifelong Learning Centre for more information.
Apprentices must meet the eligibility criteria specified in the ESFA funding rules. The minimum duration of each apprenticeship is based on the apprentice working 30 hours a week or more, including any off-the-job training they undertake. If the apprentice works fewer than 30 hours a week it may be possible to extend the minimum duration (pro rata) to take account of this. This will need to be done in consultation with the University, the employer and the applicant.
The selection process will include an interview with your employer and the Lifelong Learning Centre to assess suitability.
If you’re entering through the Alternative Entry Scheme, you’ll be sent details after the interview.
Once you’re made an offer you’ll be asked to engage with Kickstart. This is a pre-entry programme designed to ease your move into studying at the University of Leeds.
