Develop your skills and understanding of core concepts within clinical education and become an exceptional education practitioner. Rooted in workplace learning, our course is designed to encourage critical and creative thinking in yours and your students’ perspectives and practice on teaching, learning and assessment.
Whether you're from a clinical setting or a Higher Education institution, this course will develop your understanding of the education and assessment required of the generation of clinical practitioners.
With us, you will:
- Debate and discuss central themes and issues in clinical education
- Explore the differences between clinical and educational research
- Undertake introductory research training in educational research
- Design and conduct small-scale empirical research on a topic relevant to the clinical education workplace
- Complete two compulsory modules within the first year (PGCert year), delivered using a flexible, blended learning approach
- Complete two compulsory modules in the second year (PGDip year) in a specified order
The second year of our course is delivered completely online. In your final year (MEd year), you’ll complete a dissertation with support from an academic supervisor completely online.
The MEd offers a deep dive into the policy and practice of clinical education and the research it produces as result. You will learn with and from an interdisciplinary and interprofessional team of tutors and peers in a collaborative learning environment. Your learning throughout the course will draw on, and make connections to, your real-world experience as a clinical educator.
There are five compulsory modules in this MEd Clinical Education, which all students must complete in the specified order. The first two modules (PGCert year) use a flexible, blended delivery. The other three modules over Years 2 and 3 are delivered in a fully online format. Research-led teaching, coaching and supervision is provided by a highly experienced, interdisciplinary team from the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.
The module, ‘Developing Educational Practice’, is assessed by an essay and a group project followed by an individual written assignment. ‘Researching Clinical Education’ is assessed by the production of a research proposal and protocol. You will be required to complete each module and its associated coursework successfully before proceeding to the next module. Your results in all modules count towards your final qualification.

Students who complete the MEd and progress onto the PGDip at Leeds may have completed a PG Cert in Clinical/Medical/Healthcare Professional Education elsewhere at another university. For this we use the APL process.
It is a course requirement that you be working in a clinical or educational setting with the opportunity to engage in some form of teaching, training, or mentoring.
Due to the nature of blended teaching in the first year of the programme (PG Cert level), the first year is not available to study by applicants who are outside the UK. Direct entry to year 2 of the programme (PG Dip level) is available to international applicants who already have a PG Cert in Clinical, Medical or Healthcare Professional Education.
Direct entry to year 3 of the programme (MEd level) is only possible if applicants hold a PG Diploma in Clinical, Medical or Healthcare Professional Education studied at the University of Leeds. Language requirement is IELTS 7.0 overall, with no less than 6.5 in any component.

Documents and information you MUST include as part of your application:
- Two referees must be supplied at the point of application. One of the two references should be a letter of support from your manager, confirming that you are and will be engaged in teaching in your workplace as part of your role and that you will be given sufficient teaching time to meet the assessment requirements for the course. The reference should be provided on a headed document with either a stamp from the institution or an electronic signature.
Personal statement (minimum one paragraph) – outlining your reasons for wishing to undertake the course, details of relevant experience and how you will be able to satisfy the teaching requirements for the assessment. You should demonstrate through the supporting statement how the course will be of direct benefit to your personal and professional development.
Copy of your degree certificate, or equivalent. professional body documentation or number (GMC, NMC, etc.). sponsorship/funding confirmation letter, where applicable.
