Management of Information Systems and Digital Innovation

Digital technologies are fundamentally transforming the ways businesses operate, allowing for new business models, services, ways of working and forms of engagement. This course will equip you with the in-demand skills and capabilities needed to utilise digital technologies effectively in business.

Our graduates are prepared to work in the intersection of technology and business, going on to enjoy successful careers in areas including consulting, project management, systems development and strategy.

You’ll develop techniques for managing technology-mediated change and innovation in business, while adapting to meet the challenges and opportunities posed by digital transformation.

You’ll benefit from strong links to business, as the course has been co-designed by academic experts and industry leaders from our Advisory Board.

Digital technology in business is a constantly evolving subject area with real world application and impact. This is reflected in the course at Leeds, which is regularly reviewed and updated to ensure it remains relevant to key trends and pressing challenges in digital technology.

Course highlights

  • This course responds to the needs of the industry and evolves to explore developments and trends, such as disruptive technologies, AI, blockchain, big data, and social media.
  • You’ll develop industry-relevant digital management skills, such as project management methodologies, digital transformation strategy, social media strategy, consultancy techniques, human-centered design and business model innovation.
  • You’ll have the opportunity to specialise in an area relevant to your specific interests and career aspirations through optional modules.
  • Content is co-developed by industry partners through an Advisory Board, with representatives from leading UK and international businesses, including IBM, ITV, BT, and Thales Group. Members also deliver guest lectures, hands-on workshops, site visits, and provide dissertation projects.
  • Benefit from teaching informed by research from the AIMTech Research Centre, one of Europe’s most influential research centres in information systems and information management.
  • You’ll either create an in-depth research dissertation, or have the opportunity to apply for a competitive, company dissertation project, allowing you to gain industry experience by addressing real-world challenges.
  • On all Masters courses at Leeds University Business School you’ll have an opportunity to apply for a place on a week-long international study tour which will include company visits, guest lectures and networking events, as well as an opportunity to visit local places of interest. Previous study tours have included visits to Berlin, Frankfurt, Milan and Zurich.

Course details

Core modules explore approaches to digital transformation management and the strategic importance of developing business opportunities through digital technologies. You’ll also learn about how digital innovation can help develop sustainability practices in business.

Our core modules will also develop your understanding of human-centered design and emerging AI systems. This will give you knowledge of the latest human-machine collaboration, as well as the critical challenges that need addressing.

You’ll learn important skills for project management, such as agile methodologies. This includes learning about contemporary approaches to digital projects such as crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. You’ll further broaden your skills and competencies by examining the ways in which businesses use analytics.

Within the course, you’ll choose one optional module from a range of specialisms, such as data visualisation, data-driven consultancy, operations and supply chain management and entrepreneurship. You’ll also have the opportunity to apply for our ‘Hacking for the Ministry of Defence’ module, which allows you to use entrepreneurship and innovation frameworks to tackle real-world organisational problems.

By the end of the course, you’ll submit a dissertation on a topic of your choice to focus on a specific question in-depth. You may be able to apply for a project set by one of our industry partners, demonstrating your knowledge and skills in an area of clear interest to business.

Learning and teaching

You’ll be taught using a range of methods including lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. Our modules include guest lectures from industry partners, allowing you to gain insights and career advice while building your professional networks. The rest of your time will be spent in independent learning, further developing your skills in research and analysis.

On this course, you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Assessment

Assessment methods emphasise not just knowledge, but essential skills development too. This may include formal exams, group projects, reports, computer simulation exercises, essays and written assignments, group and individual presentations and reflective logs.

This diversity enables you to develop a broad range of skills as preparation for professional life.

Improve your English

International students who do not meet the English language requirements for this programme may be able to study our postgraduate pre-sessional English course, to help improve your English language level.

This pre-sessional course is designed with a progression route to your degree programme and you’ll learn academic English in the context of your subject area. Scholarships and financial support

We’re offering up to 50 Business School Excellence Scholarships to UK and International students starting one of our Masters courses in 2025. These scholarships offer a 50% fee reduction and will be awarded to particularly deserving applicants who demonstrate excellent academic, professional and personal achievements.
