Course overview

Develop the geophysical skills needed to understand the Earth’s subsurface, for a challenging yet rewarding career within energy, environmental and engineering.
Understanding the Earth's internal structure is essential for tackling some of the world’s most pressing energy and environmental challenges. Geophysicists play a vital role in locating and managing the resources that society depends on, from groundwater and critical minerals to geothermal energy and other subsurface energy resources.
They’re also central to emerging technologies that support our shift to a more sustainable future, including carbon capture and storage, underground energy storage and environmental monitoring. Their expertise helps us manage resources sustainably, build resilient infrastructure and protect the environment.
With our Geophysics in Energy and Environment MSc, you’ll explore what it’s like to work as a professional geophysicist in a rapidly evolving field.
You’ll develop advanced training in investigating and understanding Earth’s structure and composition, as well as hands-on experience of industry-standard survey methods, such as seismic, radar, and geoelectrical analysis. You’ll then learn to integrate these approaches with geological interpretation, geospatial data and modern computational techniques to solve real-world challenges.
As the world increasingly turns to subsurface resource management, environmental monitoring and low-carbon energy technologies, upon graduation, you’ll be able to contribute your geophysics expertise to meet this demand across various sectors worldwide.

Course details and modules
In semester 1, you’ll develop the theoretical foundations needed to investigate and interpret the Earth’s subsurface. Regardless of your academic background, you’ll gain training in geological concepts, computational methods, and the mechanical behaviour of rocks alongside the skills required to analyse seismic datasets and digital data systems.
Throughout semester 2, you’ll put this knowledge into practice. You will explore how machine learning methods are used as an assistive technology in geophysics and the environment, alongside geological and physics-based methods of seismic interpretation. Through our near-surface geophysics module, you’ll receive hands-on training with industry-standard survey equipment, typically applied during a residential field course in Wales. Working on a simulated development scenario, such as a proposed wind farm or carbon-capture and storage prospect, you'll gain practical experience of how geophysics supports site investigation and environmental assessment.
The knowledge and skills developed throughout the year culminate in an independent research project and dissertation, where you'll apply advanced geophysical techniques to a real-world energy, environmental or subsurface challenge, and present at a conference-style event with industry and researcher partners.
Throughout the programme, you’ll engage with a diverse range of guest speakers from industry and research organisations. Their insights will help you stay informed about the latest developments in the sector, while also providing valuable networking opportunities and early awareness of project, internship and graduate career opportunities. You'll gain a first-hand understanding of what it's like to work as a professional geophysicist in a highly dynamic field.
Course structure
The list shown below represents typical modules/components studied and may change from time to time. Read more in our terms and conditions.
Year 1 compulsory modules
Computational Analysis Techniques (15 credits)
In this module, you’ll learn how to estimate subsurface properties from geophysical data using the techniques and theory of data inversion. You will also learn the fundamental considerations in designing a digital recording system. You'll receive training in the use of the Python scientific programming language, building inverse theory algorithms in Python and learning programming skills to take into other modules.
Geology and Petrophysics (15 credits)
This module provides the basic tools required to characterise rocks at all depths and spatial scales, in the context of striking a balance between economic growth and environmental safeguarding. The module starts by reinforcing your fundamental geological skills, including a one-day field trip, and explores the seismic expression of basin-scale structural geology. Thereafter, you will receive training in the quantitative petrophysical analysis of rocks at a well-log to microscopic scale.
Seismic Reflection Surveying (15 credits)
In this module, you’ll discover the fundamental considerations that enable seismic reflection imaging of the Earth’s interior. You will apply seismic processing techniques using an industry-standard software package and learn how acquisition technologies contribute to improved imaging potential.
Geophysical Reservoir Evaluation (15 credits)
At the heart of this module is interpreting the physical properties of subsurface materials from seismic and other geophysical data. Based in rock mechanics principles, you will discover the use of quantitative seismic methods to detect petrophysical and fluid changes in the subsurface. The module provides new developments in seismic reservoir characterisation, with special attention to geophysical monitoring for low-carbon geotechnologies.
Near Surface Geophysics (15 credits)
This module provides training in the seismic and geoelectrical approaches commonly used in near-surface exploration, including for hydrological, engineering and archaeological applications. In addition to technical training, you’ll become familiar with writing a field report and the logistical considerations that must be made in near-surface site investigations. The module culminates in a residential field trip, in which you can put geophysical learning into field practice.
Rock Mechanics (15 credits)
In this module, you will learn about the theory governing the mechanical properties of rocks, such as stress, strain, strength and failure in rock, and how this impacts subsurface structure and its geophysical characterisation, for energy, environmental and engineering applications.
Seismic Data Interpretation (15 credits)
On completion of this module, you’ll be familiar with the methods of seismic interpretation across a range of scales. You’ll learn how to build geological models from 2D and 3D seismic volumes, how to expand the interpretability of a seismic volume, and discover how the key elements of reservoir architecture are expressed in seismic data. You’ll explore the standard industrial workflow, from tying the seismic to well data to converting your interpretation to depth.
Machine Learning and Statistics (15 credits)
You’ll discover how to choose and apply appropriate statistical methodologies in your career, including significance testing, regression, and non-parametric statistics. You’ll learn how to use machine learning models, such as deep learning, to aid your applied projects or research, with examples from environmental and geophysical settings.
Geophysics in Energy and Environment: Project and Dissertation (60 credits)
Over the summer, you'll apply your knowledge and skills to an independent project that explores an authentic research challenge. Projects are tailored to your individual interests and often developed in collaboration with external partners, with opportunities in some cases to undertake an internship as part of the project. This is your opportunity to make your own contribution to the field of geophysics. Whether you plan to pursue a career in industry or continue into academic research, the project provides valuable experience in independent investigation, problem-solving and professional practice.
Fieldwork
In semester 1, you‘ll take part in a geology field trip designed to develop or refresh your understanding of the fundamental geological principles and their importance in subsurface interpretation.
In semester 2, you’ll complete a week-long residential field trip. You will use industry-standard geophysical survey systems to conduct a site investigation of a shallow bedrock target, gaining practical experience in survey design, data acquisition, processing and interpretation.
Depending on your chosen topic, your independent research project may also include fieldwork, providing further opportunities to apply geophysical techniques to energy, environmental or engineering challenges.
Learning and teaching
You will learn through a mix of lectures and in-class and software practicals, and active-learning workshops that blend the two approaches. Your background instruction in geological principles is complemented by a day of in-field training, and our residential geophysics field trip is your opportunity to put classroom theory into authentic practice.
You'll join a diverse community, benefiting from the opportunity to learn alongside students from a wide range of academic and cultural backgrounds. An induction programme before the start of teaching will help you settle into life at Leeds, meet your fellow students and teaching staff, and discover the support available across the University.
Throughout the year, you'll have access to a range of academic, personal and professional support services, and you'll be assigned a personal tutor who will provide guidance and support throughout your studies.
